Introduction
Irritable bowel syndrome is now a very common condition, with many GPs only able to prescribe symptom control without much advice as how to approach the problem effectively. The symptoms of this condition can be very distressing, to the extent that many sufferers avoid social situations due to fear of embarrassment. The symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, indigestion and constipation.
This condition develops as a result of lifestyle issues that lead to prolonged periods of stress. Issues such as a death in the family, pressure at work, family demands, relationship difficulties or financial problems. During this period of stress the body produces adrenaline to increase energy enabling the person to cope with the problems. However, one side-effect is to shut down digestion. Over a period of time undigested food passes into the bowel leading to a lack of good bacteria and the development of food intolerances. The nutritional status of the person becomes depleted and they experience tiredness making them more prone to feel stressed.
Treatment
Our IBS clinic is lead by our Registered Nurse, Lucy Scott, who is qualified and experienced in treating digestive problems using naturopathic (natural) methods. Following a thorough review of the client’s lifestyle and symptoms a physical assessment will reveal the extent of the imbalances that have occurred. This is important for the development of an effective treatment plan, which may include a course of Colonic hydrotherapy and natural supplements to aid digestion and rectify any bacterial imbalance in the gut.
Colonic hydrotherapy is an excellent treatment for IBS. Herbal medicine enables the treatment to be highly individualised treating nervous conditions along with digestive symptoms in the same remedy. Other treatments include Reflexology, Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture and Massage. These are additional to nutritional advice and supplement recommendations.
It is most important to anyone’s health to have good digestion. Correcting the physical problems and nutritional imbalances enables the client to cope much better with stressful situations.
